Orthokeratology From Your South Windsor, CT Optometrist
When you visit your optometrist in South Windsor CT, either Dr. Prudhomme or Dr. Marquis, you’ll receive outstanding care and customized attention to your needs. Many of our patients need help improving the quality of their vision but don’t want to have to wear contact lenses or glasses all day long. That’s why we offer orthokeratology, also known as Ortho-K. This is a unique treatment plan that may give you all of the benefits you need.
What Is Ortho-K?
Ortho-K is a type of vision shaping, corneal molding treatment in which the vision is improved by changing the shape of the cornea, or the outer most lens of the eye. What makes it unique is that it is done overnight. At night, you’ll wear a very specially designed contact lens that rather aggressively changes the shape of the cornea. Then, when you wake in the morning, that shape is maintained, usually for one or two days. You will not need to wear contact lenses or eyeglasses with this treatment.
Ortho-K is an FDA-approved treatment for correcting vision through corneal reshaping. It is considered safe for overnight use with few if any, side effects.
Who Are Good Candidates for Ortho-K?
Not everyone will benefit from this procedure. It is best for:
- Those who have a low to moderate degree of myopia, also known as nearsightedness
- Individuals who have astigmatism (you do not have to have astigmatism to qualify)
- Age is not a concern, most anyone in the family can qualify
- The overall patient’s abilities to care for the contact lenses and use them are a factor as well.
Our team will help you to learn more about the procedure and how well it can work to meet your needs. Often, individuals who do not want LASIK eye surgery, or who do not qualify for laser eye surgery, can still benefit from the use of Ortho-K. Be sure to ask our team about this when you come in for an appointment.
How Does Ortho-K Work? How Can Your Eye Doctor Help?
When you visit your eye doctor, our goal will be to exam your eyes to ensure they are healthy enough for this procedure. From there, we can determine which of the Ortho-K lenses currently available will help to correct the shape of your cornea. We take a great deal of time ensuring your lens fitting is just right. Our goal is to create customized lenses to give you the very best results. Some of the options we offer are made through CAD programs.
Once the lens is shaped and ready for you, we’ll teach you how to position it in your eye. They work and feel much like traditional contact lenses. Over time, you may not feel them. We’ll talk about when you’ll be able to see results and how to care for your eyes going forward.
