If you’re considering switching to contact lenses, you’ve probably got a lot of questions. Our Manchester Optometry staff realized that a lot of thought goes into deciding on vision care, and they’ve created this list of frequently asked questions about contacts.
Answers to your Frequently Asked Questions from your Manchester Optometrists
How long does it take to get used to wearing contacts?
Depending on what type of contacts you get, it should take between a day and two weeks before you’re completely comfortable with them.
Can a lens get lost behind my eye?
No, your eye isn’t built like that. It’s possible for the lens to move up underneath your eyelid if you rub your eyes a lot. If you can’t remove it, your eye doctor can locate it and get it out easily.
What kinds of contact lenses are available?
There are multiple types, ranging from daily-wear soft contacts to those that are designed to be worn 24 hours a day for weeks at a time. You and your optometrist will decide which contact lens is right for you.
What if I have an unusual prescription?
There are not contact lenses available for people with astigmatism, those who need bifocals, and UV-blocking contacts for those who have to be outside in the sunlight for extended periods of time.
What about colored contacts?
You can get contact lenses to change the color of your eyes if you wish. Always wanted purple eyes? You can do that with new decorative contacts even if you don’t need corrective lenses.
What’s the difference between daily and extended wear contacts?
Daily wear lenses have to be taken out each night and cleaned and soaked in a solution. The extended wear version is made of a special material which allows more oxygen to reach your eyeball, making it safer for you to sleep with them in. Your eye doctor will discuss with you about how long your extended wear contact lenses can stay in before cleaning.
